According to industry sources on June 5, LG Display plans to invest in OLEDs using the idle space of its Paju factory in Gyeonggi Province. After discussions with Gyeonggi Province and Paju City, a memorandum of understanding will be exchanged as early as next month.
LG Display Paju Factory
The investment was made in South Korea after LG Display sold its large LCD factory in Guangzhou, China. LG Display sold the Guangzhou factory to CSOT, a subsidiary of China's TCL, for 2.2466 trillion won in April this year, and is expected to use the funds to invest in domestic equipment in South Korea.
If Korean companies that have expanded overseas liquidate, transfer, or reduce their overseas local companies and establish or expand new companies in Korea, they will receive subsidies and tax breaks. When the display and other national strategic technology industries return to Korea, each company is expected to receive 20 billion won in national funds and 30 billion won in local funds.
LG Display has said that it will use the funds secured from the sale for facility investment, research and development, and operating expenses to ensure the competitiveness of its OLED business.
In addition, LG Display announced on the same day that it repaid the 1 trillion won borrowed from LG Electronics ahead of schedule. The original repayment date was March 30, 2026, but the repayment time was advanced by about 10 months. LG Display borrowed 1 trillion won from LG Electronics in March 2023 to strengthen the competitiveness of its OLED business and secure operating funds.
