Foldable OLED panels will account for 8.6% of the market in 2032, a fivefold increase in just eight years. Apple is a key variable.

On August 20, Omdia's latest data predicted that by 2032, global shipments of foldable OLED screens will reach 124.6 million units, accounting for 8.6% of the overall OLED market , significantly higher than the 23.1 million units in 2024 and the 23.5 million units expected in 2025.

Omdia believes that a continuous stream of new models will continue to drive market growth over the next few years. While growth will be limited in 2025, it will lay the foundation for a subsequent surge. Over the next eight years (2024 to 2032), foldable phone shipments are projected to surge fivefold.

The report notes that while manufacturers like Samsung, Google, and Vivo are continuously upgrading their products, gradually addressing issues like thickness, hinge structure, and battery life, price and consumer preferences remain key obstacles. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Fold 7 excels in hinge and battery performance, but market acceptance will take time.

Industry insiders generally believe that if Apple launches its own foldable phone, it will significantly alter the industry landscape. Apple consistently prioritizes product maturity and is reportedly working on technical challenges such as screen creases, hinge durability, and battery life. Omdia expert Jerry Kang stated that Apple's entry into the market will "establish credibility in the foldable screen category" and spark a new wave of demand that surpasses that of the Android camp.

Omdia predicts that 2026 will mark a turning point in the foldable device market. With continued technological advancements and increased participation from manufacturers, foldable phones are expected to transition from niche products to mainstream options. Apple's entry into the market will not only drive innovation but also potentially lead to a gradual adjustment in pricing, attracting more consumers to try new form factors.
